At her high school graduation in 1896, she gave the valedictory address, titled “Deep Lies the Gem”. Around 1908 she moved to Los Angeles, California, where she was married on 15 February 1911 to Milton Babcock Gardner. Milton was born 10 August 1873 in Johnson County, Iowa, to John W. Gardner and Sarah K. Steele. He and Lena lived in the part of Los Angeles known as Eagle Rock. Milton died on 08 August 1949, and Lena died on 13 May 1968. He lived with his father and stepmother in Le Roy, Kansas until at least 1900. He was registered to vote in Fresno County, California in 1908 and 1909, with occupations listed as “pumper” and “tool dresser”, respectively; in the census of 1910 he shared a residence with two other men in Kern County, California and was working as a “still man” for an oil refinery. No record of him has yet been found in the censuses of 1920 and 1930, nor in the draft registrations for the First World War. But in 1934 he was registered to vote as a resident of Maywood, Los Angeles County, and in 1938 he was registered in San Jose, Santa Clara County, as a kitchen worker for the county hospital (now known as the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center). He died at the hospital that same year, on 25 December 1938, and is buried in the Mission City Cemetery in Santa Clara. It seems he never married, and much of his life is still a mystery.

  16. Louise Wilhelmina⁵ Gilomen (Jakob Wilhelm⁴, Niklaus³, Niklaus², Niklaus¹) was born on 30 September 1900 in Marine Township. For some reason, she appears in census records as Lucy, but the baptism record clearly reads Louise, as does her death certificate. She married John Binder, Jr. in 1923. John was born in about 1903 in Lawrence County, Pennsylvania to John Binder, Sr. and Sara Maria Artz (which may be a misspelling of Arzt); his parents were from the part of Austria-Hungary that became Romania, but their mother tongue was German. Sometime in the 1920s, the whole Binder family moved to Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona. I don’t know if this was before or after John and Louise got married. In Phoenix, John and his father were streetcar operators. Louise died in Phoenix on 02 May 1928. John later married Edna Iberg, and the obituary of Louise and John’s daughter Shirley gives the names of Shirley’s parents as John and Edna. John died in 1958. He and Louise are probably both buried in Greenwood Cemetery, in Phoenix.

He married Sophie Qvale, who was born on 31 October 1893. At the time of the 1920 census, Art and Sophie were living with Art’s brother Romeo in Willmar (see immediately above), and Art is shown with the same occupation as Romeo, proprietor of a “variety store”. In 1930, Art is living on his own, still with this occupation, but is shown as single; so Sophie may have died in the 1920s. Art died in Hennepin County, Minnesota on 15 October 1952. He and Sophie do not appear to have had any children.

Sometime after 1930, William and Lillian probably moved to Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona. William died in Phoenix in February 1966, and Lillian died in Phoenix on 21 October 1984. They had at least one child.

  63. Maynard Frank⁵ Leibrock (Antonia Josephina⁴ Staeger, Maria Anna³ Tscharner, Elisabeth² Gilomen, Niklaus¹) was born on 14 August (or July) 1886 in Mascoutah, St. Clair County, Illinois. 64. Owen John⁵ Lebkuecher (Antonia Josephina⁴ Staeger, Maria Anna³ Tscharner, Elisabeth² Gilomen, Niklaus¹) was born on 24 April 1889 in Illinois. On 06 November 1918, he married Ruth D. Clutts in Davidson County, Tennessee. Ruth was born in March 1893 in Tennessee to Charles A. Clutts and Lucy G. Dillion. According to a 1924 city directory, John ran a small cigar manufacturing company in Nashville; but in the census of 1930, they were living in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. John was listed as a machinist, and Ruth was working as a clerk in a bank. They probably moved back to Nashville eventually: John died in Nashville on 19 September 1955. The couple do not seem to have had any children.

  65. Mary O.⁵ Lebkuecher (Antonia Josephina⁴ Staeger, Maria Anna³ Tscharner, Elisabeth² Gilomen, Niklaus¹) was born in April 1891 in Hopkinsville, Christian County, Kentucky. On 31 January 1907, she married Joseph Henry Primm in Davidson County, Tennessee. Joe was born in Tennessee on 24 October 1882 to Newell H. Primm and Paralee Maxwell. He worked as a presser in a tailor shop at first, but by 1918 he was a tailor with his own shop. Mary died between 1920 and 1926, and Joe died on 17 June 1926 in Nashville. They had at least one child.

  66. Blanche A.⁵ Lebkuecher (Antonia Josephina⁴ Staeger, Maria Anna³ Tscharner, Elisabeth² Gilomen, Niklaus¹) was born in August 1892 in Hopkinsville, Christian County, Kentucky. By 1920, she owned a home in Nashville where she lived with her youngest brother Leo and their older half-sister, Evelyn Lebkuecher Ricketts.

There is a marriage record on file in Crittenden County, Arkansas, dated 24 February 1922, for Blanche Lebkuecher, resident of Nashville, Tennessee, and Ambrose P. Beronio, resident of Memphis, Tennessee. Yet the 1930 census does not reflect that Blanche ever married this man. It shows her as single and still living in Davidson County, working as a farmer, with her brother Leo still living with her and working as a “display man” in a clothing store. The 1930 census also shows Ambrose living in Memphis with the woman he did marry in 1927. The 1922 marriage record does include the marriage return, so maybe Blanche and Ambrose were very briefly married and then quickly divorced, or maybe the marriage was even annulled for some reason.

  67. Olvey Francis⁵ Lebkuecher (Antonia Josephina⁴ Staeger, Maria Anna³ Tscharner, Elisabeth² Gilomen, Niklaus¹), usually known as Frank, was born on 06 December 1893 in Hopkinsville, Christian County, Kentucky. On 23 April 1913, he married Lucy Minton in Davidson County, Tennessee. Lucy was born in Russell County, Virginia in October 1895 to Tivis Minton and Mary Meade. By 1930, Frank and Lucy moved to Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, where Frank worked as a machinist. Frank died in Cleveland on 07 August 1935. Lucy died in East Cleveland on 29 September 1961. They don’t seem to have had any children.

  68. Ralph Philip⁵ Lebkuecher (Antonia Josephina⁴ Staeger, Maria Anna³ Tscharner, Elisabeth² Gilomen, Niklaus¹) was born on 15 July 1898 in Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee. In 1930, he was warking as a window trimmer for an advertising company in Nashville. He was married and had at least one child.

  69. Clarence William⁵ Keyler (Ida M.⁴ Schumacher, Maria Anna³ Tscharner, Elisabeth² Gilomen, Niklaus¹) was born on 11 June 1890 in Nashville, Washington County, Illinois. He worked in his father’s jewelry shop when young, and later served in the First World War. On 31 December 1918, he married Louise A. Meinert, who was born in Washington County on 24 March 1889 to Henry Meinert and Sophia Hoffman. Clarence worked as a shipping clerk for a tobacco company in Nashville, Illinois in 1920, but by 1930 he and Louise maved to St. Louis, Missouri, where Clarence was a shipping clerk for International Shoe Company. After 26 years, he retired, and they moved back to Nashville. Clarence died in Nashville, Illinois in August 1972, and Louise died there in October 1980. They had no children.

  70. Erma⁵ Keyler (Ida M.⁴ Schumacher, Maria Anna³ Tscharner, Elisabeth² Gilomen, Niklaus¹) was born on 30 November 1893, probably in Nashville, Washington County, Illinois. She worked as a secretary for the Red Cross in 1920, and as a saleslady of “ladies’ ready-to-wear” clothing in 1930, continuing to live with her parents through that time. What she did after that is not known to me; but it appears that she never married, and she lived to the age of 103, so she probably had a fairly interesting life. Erma died in St. Louis, Missouri on 04 September 1997.

  71. Doris D.⁵ Tscharner (Francis J.⁴, Johann Friedrich³, Elisabeth² Gilomen, Niklaus¹) was born in 1908 in Henderson County, Kentucky. In 1927, she was a teacher at the Baskett School in Henderson County. She died on 12 October 1989 in Jefferson County, Kentucky.

Robert died on 30 September 1994, also in Louisville.

  73. Peter⁵ Rock (Ida⁴ Willhauk, Elisabeth³ Gilomen, Christian², Niklaus¹) was born in April 1882 in Illinois. The 1900 census shows his occupation as some sort of driver, but the rest is hard to interpret. Peter must have gotten married shortly after 1900 and died before 1910, because his parents had a granddaughter living with them who otherwise cannot be accounted for.

  74. Edward William⁵ Rock (Ida⁴ Willhauk, Elisabeth³ Gilomen, Christian², Niklaus¹) was born on 15 August 1885 in Trenton, Clinton County, Illinois. Around 1917, he married Clara, who was born about 1890 in Illinois. They lived in Belleville, St. Clair County, Illinois. Frances was born on 21 September 1887 in St. Clair County, Illinois to William C. Lortz and Sarah Emilie Peter. Conrad and Frances lived in Belleville, St. Clair County. Like his brother Edward, Conrad was a butcher for a meat market. He died on 06 November 1922 in Belleville. Following Conrad’s death, Frances worked from home as a seamstress. She died in Missouri in June 1965. Conrad and Frances had one child.

  76. Frank W.⁵ Rock (Ida⁴ Willhauk, Elisabeth³ Gilomen, Christian², Niklaus¹) was born on 28 February 1894. He married Amelia, who was born about 1895 in Illinois.

  77. Lily Minnie⁵ Gafner (Carolina⁴ Willhauk, Elisabeth³ Gilomen, Christian², Niklaus¹) was born on 26 March 1892. In about March 1910, she married Edwin G. Biggs, who was born in Illinois in about June 1890 to James Biggs and Alice S. Pritchett. Lily and Edwin were divorced by 1920.

Child of Lily Gafner and Edwin Biggs:

    1. Verna Biggs, born about 1911, died 14 May 1942 in Wood River Township, Madison County, Illinois

  78. Louise⁵ Eggen (Eliza⁴ Willhauk, Elisabeth³ Gilomen, Christian², Niklaus¹) was born in January 1888 in Madison County, Illinois. In 1910, she married Iwan F. Streif in Saint Louis, Missouri. Iwan was born on 20 April 1888 in Highland to Michael C. Streif and Louisa Bertha Schmidt. His name may be a German-language spelling of Ivan, but he appears in all records with the W spelling. In 1917, Iwan was a saloon keeper; in 1920, he was manager of a confectionery; and in 1930, he was an insurance salesman. He and Louise lived in Saint Louis at least as early as 1920. They may have moved back to Highland sometime after 1930. Iwan died in Highland on 17 November 1948. Louise died on 14 October 1949 in Madison County.

Child of Louise Eggen and Iwan Streif:

    1. Lloyd Richard Streif, born 22 August 1916 in Highland, died 20 September 1991 in Highland

  79. Mathilda⁵ Eggen (Eliza⁴ Willhauk, Elisabeth³ Gilomen, Christian², Niklaus¹), known as Tillie, was born in Madison County in August 1889. On 18 April 1912, she married Charles Ulrich in Highland. Charles was born about 1889.

  80. Flora⁵ Eggen (Eliza⁴ Willhauk, Elisabeth³ Gilomen, Christian², Niklaus¹) was born on 28 July 1891 in Madison County. On 14 December 1911, she married Albert L. Zobrist in Highland. Albert was born in Madison County on 01 August 1889 to Edward Zobrist and Marianna Gruenig. Flora and Albert had a farm in Saline Township. Flora died in August 1965, and Albert died in December 1972. They are buried in Highland Cemetery.

Children of Flora Eggen and Albert Zobrist:

    1. Floyd Albert Zobrist, born 18 July 1912, died 31 August 1981

Albert worked for Helvetia Milk Condensing Company until about 1919, when he and Ruby moved to the village of Belleville, Dane County, Wisconsin. Albert continued to work in the milk condensing industry. Sometime after 1930, Ruby and Albert seem to have moved to Burley, Cassia County, Idaho. Ruby died in Burley in April 1979, and Albert died there in April 1980. They had at least four children.

  82. Eduard Victor⁵ Rohr (Mary⁴ Willhauk, Elisabeth³ Gilomen, Christian², Niklaus¹), spelled Edward in English, was born on 10 September 1891 in Highland. On 04 May 1914, he married Zella A. Eagon in Tuscawaras County, Ohio. Zella was born on 09 October 1894 in Quaker City, Guernsey County, Ohio to Harvey M. Eagon and Laura Filena Powell, and grew up in Tuscawaras County. Edward and Zella seem to have lived in Ohio and Pennsylvania before moving to Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan, probably around 1920. In Detroit, Edward’s occupation had something to do with automobile sales; unfortunately the 1930 census entry is partly illegible, and I haven’t found this family in the 1920 census yet. Edward and Zella appear to have later moved to St. Petersburg, Pinellas County, Florida. Edward died in St. Petersburg in November 1976. Zella died in St. Petersburg in March 1987. They had at least two children.

  83. Royce Philipp⁵ Willhauk (Philipp Marcell⁴, Elisabeth³ Gilomen, Christian², Niklaus¹) was born on 23 October 1904 in Highland. In about 1930, he married Antoinette, who was born on 21 February 1908. In 1930, they lived in his mother’s homein St. Louis. Royce worked as a cutter for a clothing company, and Antoinette worked as a clerk for an electric company. At some point, Royce changed the spelling of the family name to Wilhauk with one L. In 1961, Royce and Antoinette lived in Goldman, Jefferson County, Missouri, which is apparently a ghost town today. Royce died in November 1961. Antoinette died in February 1984 in Saint Louis. They are buried in Good Shepherd Cemetery in Hillsboro, Jefferson County, Missouri. They had two children.

  84. Erwin Albert⁵ Zobrist (Adolph⁴, Marianna³ Gilomen, Christian², Niklaus¹) was born on 22 November 1891 in Highland. Around 1910, he married Alice A. Zopf, who was born in Madison County on 15 July 1892 to John J. Zopf and Emma Bellm. In 1918, Erwin and Alice lived in Union, McHenry County, Illinois, which is near Chicago; but by 1920 they had returned to Highland, and in 1930 they lived nearby in Saline Township, with Erwin working for a dairy. Erwin died in June 1953, and Alice died in February 1975. They are buried in Highland Cemetery. They had five children.

  85. Mildred Rose⁵ Zobrist (Adolph⁴, Marianna³ Gilomen, Christian², Niklaus¹) was born in Highland on 16 December 1892. On 21 March 1912, she married Jacob F. Willig in Highland. Jacob was born in Madison County on 17 June 1890 to Otto Willig and Margaret Buhrmann. Jacob worked in a shoe factory in 1917, 1920 and 1930; it seems likely that this was his lifelong career. For reasons unknown, Mildred was not baptized until May 1930. She died in October 1979.

Child of Mildred Zobrist and Jacob Willig:

    1. Flora M. Willig, born 13 July 1914, died February 1996
